The joy of the supermarket

I have heard all the excuses. I have heard every reason. I have even suffered through people telling me why I should be shopping elsewhere because the community needs me. Despite hearing all of this; I do not care. There is something special about the supermarket than cannot be captured elsewhere. The humming throng of people, the beating heart of consumption and capitalism, the bright lights, the colours, the sounds and the smells. It is a joy; a distillation of humanity and its development from creator to consumer.

For some the supermarket is just a shop. Just a simple place where people go to spend money on goods. Those people do not understand; they cannot grasp what is really happening. Don DeLilo’s great American novel ‘White Noise’ talks, too, about the shared experience of the supermarket and the genius involved in both its inception and its design. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and spend a few minutes in a supermarket just being.
